Access and Use Policies

The FIU College of Law Library serves primarily the research and educational needs of the faculty and students of the College of Law. However, as a public institution and federal repository, we also serve the legal information needs of FIU students and faculty, the local bar, and the general public.

For Law Students

Law students have full access to the library and all its services. Your Panther ID card serves as your library card for checking out materials.

  • 24/7 access during exam periods
  • Extended checkout periods
  • Access to all digital resources
For FIU Community

FIU faculty, staff, and students from other departments have access to the library during regular operating hours.

  • Valid Panther ID required
  • Limited checkout privileges
  • Access to most digital resources on-site
For Attorneys and Bar Members

Local attorneys and members of the bar are welcome to use the Law Library for legal research.

  • Reference assistance available
  • Limited access to digital resources
For the General Public

Members of the public are welcome during regular business hours for legal research purposes.

  • Limited access to physical resources

The Law Library offers a variety of study spaces to accommodate different learning styles and study preferences. Study spaces are only available to enrolled currently FIU College of Law students or alumni studying of the bar.

Individual carrels and tables for focused, silent study in a distraction-free zone.

Computers and Printing

The Law Library provides computing resources and printing services to support your academic and research needs.

Computer Workstations
  • Over 20 computer workstations available throughout the library
  • Microsoft Office Suite available
  • Scanning capabilities at select stations
Wireless Network
  • FIU Secure Wi-Fi available throughout the building
  • Guest network available for visitors
Printing Services
  • Black and white printing: $0.12 per page
  • Color printing: $0.50 per page
  • Print from any computer workstation or your personal device
Scanning and Copying
  • Self-service scanners with email and USB options
  • Scanning is free of charge
  • Book-Eye scanning station available
  • Photocopiers available (same rates as printing)
  • Staff assistance available at the circulation desk

Course Reserve and Faculty Book List

The Law Library maintains a collection of course materials placed on reserve by faculty members. These materials are available for short-term checkout to ensure all students have access to required readings.

Course Reserves

Course reserves include textbooks, supplementary readings, and other materials assigned by your professors. These items have limited checkout periods to ensure fair access for all students.

  • 2-hour checkout period for most items
  • Some materials restricted to in-library use only
  • Overdue fines: $1 per hour, up to $20 per item

ILL

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows FIU Law students, faculty, and staff to obtain materials not available in our library collection. We will borrow these materials from other libraries on your behalf.

How to Request
  1. Log in to your ILLiad account
  2. Complete the appropriate request form
  3. Provide as much bibliographic information as possible
  4. Submit your request
Loan Policies
  • Books: Typically loaned for 3-4 weeks, depending on the lending library's policies
  • Articles: Electronic delivery to your ILLiad account
  • Processing Time: 3-5 business days for articles, 1-2 weeks for books
  • Renewals: May be requested, subject to approval by the lending library
